How to Qualify an International Manufacturer
How do you tell a real manufacturer from a trading company with a website?
Manufacturer qualification tests four things: legal and commercial existence, genuine production capability for the specific item, documented quality and certification, and export experience to your destination. Evidence should be documentary — registration, certificates with verifiable numbers, production photographs tied to the item, export records — not marketing material. A supplier that cannot document its claims should not carry a critical line.

Four qualification dimensions
Treat these as separate tests. A supplier can pass three and fail the one that matters for your line.
| Dimension | Evidence to request |
|---|---|
| Legal existence | Company registration, tax identity, bank details in the company name |
| Production capability | Machine list, capacity per month, photographs of the specific item in production |
| Quality and certification | Certificate numbers that can be verified with the issuing body |
| Export experience | Destinations already served, documents routinely issued |
Trader or manufacturer — and does it matter?
Sometimes it does not. An authorised distributor can be the correct source for a branded item. What matters is that the buyer knows which they are dealing with, because it changes price structure, lead-time control and warranty handling.
Sample and pre-production control
For private-label and specification-built products, approve a sample against written acceptance criteria before series production. Verbal approval of a photograph is not an acceptance criterion.

- Certificates verified with the issuing body, not just received
- Capacity stated per month for the specific item
- Export destinations confirmed
- Sample or pre-production approval process agreed
- Written acceptance criteria before production
- Named contact with authority to commit
