HDPE vs GRP for Water Infrastructure Projects
When should a water project specify HDPE pipe and when GRP?
HDPE is a thermoplastic pipe joined mainly by butt fusion or electrofusion, valued for leak-tight joints, flexibility and resistance to ground movement. GRP is a glass-reinforced thermosetting pipe, valued for large diameters, high stiffness at low weight and chemical resistance. HDPE tends to suit small and medium diameters, buried distribution and difficult ground; GRP tends to suit large-diameter transmission, gravity sewers and aggressive effluents. Material comparison
Both materials are established in water infrastructure. They fail differently, are installed differently and are procured differently — which is why the choice affects far more than unit price.

Procurement consequences
HDPE in small diameters can ship in coils, which changes container utilisation completely. GRP is a volume cargo: the freight decision often matters more than the price per metre, and shipment planning has to start with cubic metres rather than tonnes.
Fittings and jointing consumables are where projects lose time. Order the fusion fittings, gaskets, couplings and the jointing equipment as part of the same package, on the same schedule as the pipe.
Documentation to specify
For potable water, require the manufacturer's material and potable-water suitability documentation for the exact resin or laminate used, plus hydrostatic test records for the production batch. Confirm which standard the project design is written to, and require the certificate to reference that standard.
