Prime vs Standby Generator: Procurement Guide
What is the difference between prime and standby generator ratings, and which should be bought?
A standby rating covers emergency supply during mains failure, for a limited number of hours per year and without sustained overload capability. A prime rating covers variable-load running for unlimited hours where no mains supply exists. Continuous ratings cover constant load without interruption. Buying a standby-rated set for prime duty is one of the most common and most expensive procurement errors in off-grid operations.

The three ratings
Ratings describe permitted duty, not just power output. The same physical engine can carry different ratings.

What to state in the RFQ
Duty, expected average load factor, annual running hours, site altitude and ambient temperature, fuel specification, and whether the set is open, canopied or containerised. Altitude and temperature derate output; a set quoted at ISO conditions may not deliver the required power on site.
- Duty type: standby, prime or continuous
- kVA and kW at site conditions, not only at ISO conditions
- Altitude, ambient temperature and humidity
- Fuel tank capacity and required autonomy in hours
- Control panel, AMF and synchronising requirements
- Canopy, sound level requirement, containerisation
- Alternator and engine brand acceptance
- Spare parts and service kit for the first operating period
Procurement consequences
Prime-rated sets cost more and are heavier for the same output. That difference is recovered quickly when the alternative is a standby set running daily, where warranty is typically void and engine life is shortened substantially.
Buy the first maintenance kit and critical spares with the set. Sourcing filters separately six months later, for a remote site, costs more in downtime than the parts.
